Their story

Albertine describes learning to understand her own body while navigating care in Congo, France and the UK. She stresses the value of recognising early signs of a crisis and speaking up when care does not fit the person in front of the clinician.

Maureen brings a younger perspective: the disruption to friendships, education and plans for work, and the difficult move from children’s services into adult care. Together they show how sickle cell is lived within a family, and why support needs to reach beyond hospital treatment.
