Their story

She and her husband knew of their son’s diagnosis during pregnancy. Joy recalls being given useful information about his care, but the first years of relative calm did not prepare her for watching him experience pain as he grew older.

Her interview captures the constant judgement calls of family life: when a symptom is ordinary, when it needs urgent attention, and how to explain medication and hospital visits to a child. She is candid about fear and self-blame, alongside the strength she sees in her children.
